Sand Driver Theory Training

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is” – Yogi Berra

As much as the word ‘theory’ might give you those goosebumps, its a very important part to prepare you sand driving. During the theoretical training, you will learn the following:

  • How to drive your 4×4 on sand;
  • What is cresting and how to do it safely;
  • How to ascend and descend those steep dunes safely;
  • How to rescue a car when it gets stuck in sand;
  • What type of equipment to prepare for your sand adventure;
  • Why is sand flag so important;
  • Why is convoying in a team so important;
  • Why is teamwork necessary to cross the dunes safely;
  • And many more aspects for you to learn so that you can have fun and stay safe when you apply that theory in practice.

During our last theory session, there were more than 60 sand-drivers-to-be participating, meaning that it is a great opportunity for you to network and discuss sand-driving and 4×4 matters with your fellow trainees and ORAC committee.

The participants could also see and buy some recovery equipment from one of the local offroading suppliers who were showcasing many offroading items from kinetic ropes to fuel canisters, deflators, compressors, and more.

The registration form will be active around 2-3 weeks before the date on our Social media and website. You can find these dates using the ORAC calendar in the menu above. Follow our social media accounts and this website to stay up-to-date.

Important note: if you would like to participate in ORAC’s yearly Wahiba Challenge, you must have completed both ORAC theory and practical training within the last three years of your registration date.

Sand Driver Practical Training

“Practice makes the master” – Patrick Rothfuss

This is where the fun begins! For the practical training, we take you to the Wahiba Sands and let you drive in the sand! But don’t worry, you won’t be left alone – together with your fellow trainees, you will be driving with an experienced team leader and a sweeper. You will practice in a team all those sand driving aspects that were covered during your theory training; you will also learn how to rescue a car from sand and how to drive in convoy. You will also have a chance to learn the feel of your own car and adjust your driving style according to the prevailing conditions. Moreover, this is your unique opportunity to discuss with ORAC experienced drivers about any sand driving questions you might have.

The practical training normally takes one full day at the dessert. You will receive all the details from the ORAC committee upon registration after completed theory training.

The registration form will be active around 2-3 weeks before the date on our Social media and website. You can find these dates using the ORAC calendar in the side panel or the menu above. Follow our social media accounts (linked below) and this website to stay up-to-date.

Important note: if you would like to participate in ORAC’s yearly Wahiba Challenge, you must have completed both ORAC theory and practical training within the last three years of your registration date.
