Throwback to the Origins of the Wahiba Challenge!
Thought some of you might be interested in this gem from the past – an article from al-Fahal magazine, dated February 1995, documenting the very first Wahiba Challenge. Back then, it was a very different event, limited to the trusty Daihatsu jeeps that a few of us still remember fondly.
This article is a brilliant piece of history, capturing the spirit of adventure that kickstarted what has now become an iconic off-road event. If you’re taking part in or helping support the current Wahiba Challenge, I think you’ll really enjoy reading this.
It’s a great reminder of how far the Challenge has come, and how strong the spirit of exploration has always been.

A Brief History of the Wahiba Challenge
The slideshow below provides an insight into the origin and popularity the Wahiba Challenge. The images are based on a set of slides presented by Paul Sanders and David Alsop in 2017.
Sorry no text to accompany this, it predates our journey into video and sound recordings. Perhaps still of interest to see how the Landrover Adventure Club with 3 teams and 11 members in 1998 grew into ORAC with 41 teams and 349 Wahiba Challenge participants in 2017.
Let me know if you can add to this history, there are gaps. Maybe you are already part of the history.
Watch this space as I will add videos I have compiled over the years.
The slides below are from 1998 to 2017 – a total of 32 images.
